BISD meeting canceled

For the second time in less than a week, the Brownsville Independent School District has canceled a Board of Trustees meeting.

On Thursday BISD canceled a special meeting concerning redistricting for the 2012-2013 school year and fees that BISD’s new delinquent tax-collection firm will be allowed to charge.

BISD has hired the Edinburg firm of Linebarger, Heard, Goggan, Blair, Graham & Sampson L.L.P. to collect the district’s delinquent ad valorem taxes and directed the administration to negotiate a contract with the firm. That process is ongoing, BISD counsel Arturo Michel said.

Part of the process is setting the rate Linebarger can charge delinquent taxpayers. The rate currently is 12½ percent. A resolution on the canceled meeting’s agenda would have raised the rate to 15 percent.

Board President Enrique Escobedo said the meeting was canceled because several members were unable to attend.

The same was true for tonight’s regularly scheduled board meeting, but that scheduling conflict had been known for some time. Several board members and Superintendent Carl A. Montoya are out of town attending a conference, so the meeting was canceled, Escobedo said.

The next regularly scheduled BISD board meeting is at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 21 in the boardroom of the BISD administration building at 1900 Price Road.
