CBP seizes $1.8 million in cocaine, arrests Matamoros woman
U.S. Customs and Border Protection arrested a Matamoros woman accused of trying to smuggle $1.8 million in cocaine across the U.S.-Mexico border, authorities said.
Nadia Hernandez, 20, was arrested Tuesday morning at the B&M Bridge and later charged with one count of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute and conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute with intent to distribute, court records show.
On Wednesday, Hernandez went before U.S. Magistrate Judge Ronald Morgan who ordered she be held without bond and remanded her to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
The arrest took place when Hernandez drove a tan 2009 Nissan Tiida- a Mexican made vehicle - to an inspection booth and was referred to a secondary inspection area, said a CBP press release.
At the secondary inspection area, CBP officers discovered two hidden compartments containing 24 packages of cocaine weighing 58.2 pounds, records show.
The drugs have a street value of $1,862,400, authorities said.
