A Port Isabel lawyer and Brownsville native will be sworn in as judge of the 357th state District Court at 3 p.m. Friday at the Cameron County Courthouse.

Gov. Rick Perry appointed Oscar X. Garcia to the post in early April and he was confirmed by the Texas Senate later the same month.

Garcia replaces Judge Leonel Alejandro, who retired Jan. 1.

He grew up in Brownsville and graduated from Pace High School. He has practiced law in Brownsville for 23 years and is married to Point Isabel Independent School District Superintendent Lisa Garcia.

He has a private law office and is a member of the State Bar of Texas, a past member of the College of the State Bar of Texas and State Bar of Texas Grievance Panel. He is also a past board member of the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners. Garcia received his bachelor and law degrees from the University of Texas at Austin.
