The Coast Guard rescued a surfer Tuesday near the entrance to the South Padre Island jetties after he was swept away from a nearby beach by a rip current.
Coast Guard crew members from the Aids to Navigation Team were doing routine maintenance on range markers at 9:45 a.m. when they came across the surfer.
Cameron County closed the Island’s beaches yesterday afternoon as a strong storm moved through the region, dumping rain and bringing lightning and thunder to Deep South Texas.
"We recommend that all surfers closely evaluate surf conditions before heading out, always follow the buddy system while surfing, and let a friend know where and for how long you will be surfing," said Lt. Cmdr. Brendan Evans, public affairs officer for Sector Corpus Christi.
The boat crew took the surfer aboard and brought him to the Isla Blanca boat ramp.
