A 17-year-old boy died Thursday afternoon after falling from a moving vehicle, Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio said.

John Paul Burnett was in a car with his girlfriend and brother on FM 100, near Paredes Line Road, just outside of Los Fresnos, Lucio said.

Burnett fell out of the vehicle, possibly because of an unsecured door, and then was struck by an oncoming car the sheriff said.

He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Lucio said investigators are waiting for autopsy results to determine if Burnett had been drinking.

The matter is under investigation, but the driver of the car that hit the teenager is not currently facing any charges, Lucio said.
