HARLINGEN — A man left the body of a dead 20-year-old La Feria woman at the emergency room entrance of a Harlingen hospital Saturday afternoon and then fled, police said.

The woman was identified as Michelle Zapata, according to a police press release.

Officers were called about a dead woman at the entrance of the Harlingen Medical Center emergency room about 2 p.m. Saturday, police Sgt. Dave Osborne said in a prepared statement.

Witnesses told police a man entered the emergency room asking for help, according to the release.

The man grabbed a wheelchair and began to unload the woman from a white Lincoln Navigator, but fled when hospital staff began to take her to the emergency room, the release said.

“It was at that time staff realized the female was already deceased,” the release said.

Osborne said an officer saw the Navigator driving around the hospital as police were setting up a crime scene perimeter. Officers pulled over the Navigator and detained two men for questioning, he said.

“We are trying to determine exactly what took place prior to her death, and what role, if any, they had to play in it,” Osborne said.

“At this time no charges have been filed and the investigation continues.”

Osborne said an autopsy has been ordered.
