The Mercedes campuses of South Texas Independent School District went into a brief lockdown Tuesday morning after one of the schools received a threatening phone call.
An investigation determined the threat was a hoax and the lockdown was ended after about an hour, a district spokeswoman said.
“We take every single threat seriously, so we went ahead and practiced our emergency procedures,” spokeswoman Amanda Odom said. “As everybody else is doing, in any situation we want to take a look at all of our emergency operations procedures and use a situation like this to find holes and where we can be even stronger.”
The district operates high schools in San Benito, Edinburg and Mercedes, where the Science Academy of South Texas and the South Texas High School for Health Professions are based. Both schools were put on lockdown Tuesday, as well as administrative offices and the library.
Odom said Mercedes police were on site Tuesday in case backup was necessary.
