Twenty-eight Brownsville Independent School District all-state musicians are on the road today, traveling to San Antonio to perform at this weekend’s annual Texas Music Educators Association convention.

The students earned chairs in the prestigious All-State Bands and All-State Choirs, which will perform on Saturday. They competed in auditions at the district, region, and area levels against students from Houston, Corpus Christi, Laredo and the Rio Grande Valley.

Making all-state represents a significant achievement. The talent pool numbered some 55,000 musicians statewide at the beginning of the competition last fall. Those who remain at the end represent the top 2 percent of high school musicians in Texas, said Rebecca Rendon, administrator of BISD’s Department of Fine Arts.

“It’s truly an honor to qualify for an all-state choir or band,” she said. “It’s really hard. The competition is tough. We’re really proud of our kids.”
