The Cameron County Tax Assessor’s Office and Sheriff’s Department are serving tax warrants on businesses in Brownsville that owe inventory and personal property taxes that are more than a year old, County Tax Assessor Tony Yzaguirre said.
“We mean business. If 96 percent of the county tax payers can pay their taxes, the other four or five percent should,” he said.
This morning authorities served a tax warrant at the Brownsville Surgical Hospital, which owes $282,687.45 in inventory taxes.
More businesses that owe taxes will be targeted today in the first sweep the tax assessor’s office is making in an effort to collect back taxes, according to Yzaguirre.
Taxes owed by the businesses that will be targeted today total $429,680.42, according to a document provided by Yzaguirre.
