More than 25 Brownsville restaurants will participate in this year’s Taste of La Frontera. The event will offer many diverse cuisine samples representing the region from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at the Brownsville Event Center.

“You can always expect a good time and great local food from Brownsville’s restaurants,” said Rudy De La Rosa, chef and owner of Mariscos De La Rosa Restaurant.

The event will have live music and a performance by the University of Texas at Brownsville Folklorico Dancers.

“I’ve been going to this event for 10 years and it’s the best thing happening on MLK Day. I never regret going,” Brownsville resident Arturo Trevino said.

It is hosted by one of Brownsville’s oldest organizations, the Mr. Amigo Association, which works to promote the friendship between Brownsville and Matamoros by celebrating long-running traditions the two communities celebrate.

“We have been working diligently all year for this event and we are expecting a huge turnout,” Mr. Amigo Association President Yesenia Patino said. The Taste of La Frontera is a fundraiser to host Mr. Amigo’s appearance at the president’s costume ball on Feb. 28 and the awards ceremony gala on March 1.

“I am very proud and excited to represent the association and to be able to bring a great actor and Mexican ambassador to Brownsville for this year’s Mr. Amigo,” Patino said.

Members of the Mr. Amigo Association will travel to Mexico City to formally award Eduardo Yañez the honor of representing Mexico as Mr. Amigo in this year’s celebration. Yañez has worked in Hollywood on such movies as “Striptease,” “Man on Fire” and “The Punisher.” Some of his more recent works are in the television series “Cold Case” and “Sleeper Cell.”

Discounted $20 pre-sale tickets to the Taste of La Frontera are available at Antonio’s Mexican Village and the Brownsville Convention & Visitors Bureau. Online tickets are also available at www.tasteoflafrontera.eventbrite.com for $22.09 and through the Event Brite website for an additional fee. Tickets will be available at the door for $25 per person.
