Man gets 12 years in prison for sexual assault of a child

State District Judge Leonel Alejandro has sentenced a Brownsville man to 12 years in prison for the aggravated sexual assault of a child.

The Monday sentencing followed last month's finding by a Cameron County jury that Jose Guadalupe Lopez, 64, was guilty of assaulting a 12-year-old female at his house in August 2005.

Lopez initially was indicted by a grand jury in September of 2006 and was arraigned in November of 2006, the Cameron County District Attorney's Office stated in a press release.

Lopez entered a not guilty plea and had been released on a $100,000 bond pending trial.

Assistant District Attorneys Laurie Guerra and Juan Mendiola presented the case in May to the jury during a three-day trial. The jury deliberated for an hour and half before returning the guilty verdict, the press release states.

Lopez will serve his sentence in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice - Institutional Division.
