Feds: Undocumented immigrants smuggled on shrimp boat

Two men have been taken into custody for transporting illegal immigrants on a shrimp boat through the Brownsville Ship Channel, officials said.

U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Customs and Border Protection intercepted the fishing vessel early Wednesday, said Nina Pruneda, spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

CBP Marine Enforcement agents found two illegal immigrants hidden in a small compartment within the main cabin aboard the boat, according to court records. Two other undocumented immigrants, "one who claimed to be the captain of the vessel, were located within sight of the agents," court filings state.

Carlos Diaz-Meza, who was one of the four illegal immigrants aboard the ship, and Ruben Gonzalez were charged with transporting undocumented immigrants, according to court records.
