Heavy rains may be to blame for roof collapse

HARLINGEN —A collapsed roof of a downtown building, Wednesday, may have resulted from heavy rainfall, Harlingen Fire Department officials said.

The roof collapsed at Cooley’s Classic Cars, located on the corner of Commerce Street and Jackson Avenue.

Fire department officials said the gaping hole in the roof measured about 40 feet by 30 feet.

Officials reported that nobody was hurt during the incident, but owner Gary Lee Cooley said that two of his classic cars were severely damaged.

Cooley and his crew were able to move 21 of his classic cars out of the building last night, to avoid any further damage to the vehicles, he said.

Cooley said he was meeting with building contractors, city inspectors, and his insurance company today to figure out what kind of repairs the building will need.
