Valley Freedom Newspapers

Heavy rains have been reported around the Brownsville area within the past hour causing street flooding in some parts of the city.

Street flooding is occurring around 12th street and the surrounding neighborhoods.

Reports of lightning striking at least one building has also been reported.

The National Weather Service has issued an urban and small stream flooding advisory for Southern Cameron County, which includes Brownsville and Olmito until 4 p.m.

At 3:01 p.m., the NWS doppler radar indicated rainfall rates of two inches per hour from a thunderstorm over the area.

The San Pedro and Rancho Viejo areas will also be affected by the heavy rains.

Heavy rains are also moving from the north and are clustering around Harlingen and could bring 1 to 2 inches of rain over the next hour, the NWS reported.

Because of rains earlier today, the area is prone to minor flooding, according to the NWS. Some street flooding is reported in Harlingen and San Benito.

As of 2:10 p.m., almost an inch of rain was recorded at the Valley Morning Star weather station on Commerce Avenue in Harlingen.

No flood advisories have been issued, but the weather service said an urban and small stream flood advisory could be issued within the next 30 minutes.
