Travis retires after 18 years with senior legislator

A veteran of South Texas politics retires this year after 25 years in the game.

Cathy Travis, longtime communication director for U.S. Rep. Solomon Ortiz, D-Corpus Christi, will step down on Dec. 31 to pursue a writing career.

Ortiz has selected Danny Guerra of Dallas to replace Travis at his D.C. office.

Guerra, 25, previously wrote for Congressional Quarterly, a political newsmagazine.

The Dallas native and University of Texas graduate has worked for several state legislators and a lobbying firm in the state’s capital.

Travis and Guerra visited Brownsville and South Padre Island Wednesday as part of a meet-and-greet tour of the congressional district.

Guerra said he became interested in the communication director’s position “because it does involve a lot of things I feel I can connect to.”

His parents are from Mexico and he was born in Texas. This makes for “a lot of personal connections” throughout the state and border community, Guerra said.

He described the congressman as approachable and open to new ideas. He called the people of District 27 warm and aware of the issues most affecting them. He said he is looking forward to the jobs challenges and serving South Texas.
