McALLEN - Former U.S. Rep. Eligio "Kika" de la Garza II and his wife continue to recover from a car crash that landed the couple in the hospital earlier this week.

The de la Garzas remained in stable condition Thursday at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance, said Marissa Castañeda, a spokeswoman for the Edinburg hospital.

Connie Humphrey, chief of staff for U.S. Rep. Rubén Hinojosa, D-Mercedes, said in a telephone interview Thursday that family members told them the couple is expected to be released from the hospital in a few days.

"At this point they're doing well," Humphrey said.

Hinojosa's office has been handling media inquiries for the family since Wednesday.

De la Garza and his wife, Lucille, were inured Tuesday in a three-car crash on West Dove Avenue in McAllen and had to undergo surgery.

Another driver involved in the wreck, 67-year-old Emma Salinas of McAllen, was taken to Rio Grande Regional Hospital. As of Thursday she was not listed as a patient at the hospital, according to staff there.

According to a crash report from the McAllen Police Department, A white 2007 Kia Rio driven by Servando Silva Jr. was westbound on Dove Avenue when a silver 2003 Toyota Camry driven by Salinas slowed down in front of him. The Kia struck the Camry, sending it into the eastbound lane.

The Camry hit a blue Honda CRV driven by Lucille de la Garza head-on, according to the report.

No charges have been filed, but the investigator handling the crash listed the Kia driver's failure to control the vehicle's speed as a possible factor in the crash, according to the report.
