Los Fresnos host Music Festival at it's rodeo ground

For the second consecutive year, the city of Los Fresnos will host the Los Fresnos Music Festival at the city's rodeo grounds.

An offshoot of the Elvis (Presley) Festival, once held at Simon Vega's Little Graceland, this weekend's event will include performances by 12 tribute artists, classic car and motorcycle shows and carnival rides for children.

"There's more entertainment than in the previous (Elvis) festivals," said Los Fresnos Chamber of Commerce Chairman Michael Garza. "This is more diverse. Even the ‘King of Rock ‘N' Roll' is a little bit much seven hours straight."

To mix it up, Garza invited tribute artists to cover songs by Neil Diamond, Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline and others. The performers will play from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. Local rock acts will also perform at the rodeo grounds.

General admissions tickets cost $5 and can be purchased at the rodeo grounds on the day of the event. Preferred seating tickets cost $7.

The event has not lost its focus on Elvis, despite its expanded offerings. Several impersonators will perform selections from his oeuvre. Elvis would have been 74 on Jan. 8. As always, Vega's personal shrine to the "King" will be open for the occasion. Vega served in the military with Elvis 51 years ago.

In the early 1990s, he began hosting biannual Elvis Festivals - renamed the Los Fresnos Music Festival last year.
