Cameron County voters today can still cast an early vote in the approaching Nov. 3 Constitutional Amendment Election.

Today is the last day of the early voting period in an election that has drawn few voters to the four early-voting poll locations.

The early voting polls are at the Cameron County Department of Elections & Voter Registration, 954 E. Harrison St. in Brownsville, the Central Fire Station, 121 W. Jefferson St. in Harlingen, the San Benito Community Building, 210 E. Heywood St. in San Benito, and the Los Fresnos Community Building, 204 N. Brazil St. in Los Fresnos.

As of Wednesday, 888 votes from a pool of nearly 169,000 voters had been cast during the early voting period that began Oct. 19. Election official Roger Ortiz, the administrator of the elections department, estimated that another 140-150 people would vote by the end of Thursday.

"It’s sad that we don’t have a lot of people that are voting," Ortiz said.

Not even the elderly are being driven to the polls, as is customary when candidates, and not propositions, are on the ballot.

"Voting by mail also is very low. It’s a little depressing," Ortiz said, adding, however, that he is hopeful that turnout will pick up on Tuesday.

The staff of the Texas Legislative Council prepared an analysis of the 11 proposed constitutional amendments that are on the ballot and it can be accessed online at http://www.sos.state.tx.us/ with the Texas Secretary of State’s office through the Nov. 3 election link.

On election day Tuesday, there will be 52 voting polls in Brownsville, Port Isabel, Las Yescas, Los Fresnos, Olmito, San Benito, Rio Hondo, La Feria, Santa Rosa, Primera, Harlingen, Combes, South Padre Island and Laguna Heights.

The list of voting polls for Tuesday is available online at www.co.cameron.tx.us/election under the precinct-locations link.
