Jury sentences Brownsville man to 18 years
Daniel C. Hernandez, 32, of Brownsville has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for possession of marijuana, the district attorney announced Wednesday in a press release.
The jury in the 103rd Judicial District Court also handed him a $10,000 fine, Cameron County District Attorney Armando R. Villalobos said.
“Our community has spoken,” Chief First Assistant District Attorney Charles E. Mattingly Jr. said. “We are pleased with the jury’s verdict. They sent a clear message that individuals who deal in drugs and violence will not be tolerated.”
Hernandez was arrested on July 21, 2009, by the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigation Unit at the United States Postal Office parking lot on Los Ebanos Street, according to the press release.
He was attempting to ship out a cardboard box containing six bundles of marijuana, the statement said. The estimated amount of marijuana seized was 14 pounds with an estimated street value of $6,000, according to the district attorney.
Assistant District Attorneys Mario Cisneros and Pete Gilman presented evidence to the court during the two-day jury trial.
