Brownsville police are looking into an overnight single-car accident that killed one man and sent one woman to the hospital

The accident took place at the 2000 block of Coffeeport Road approximately a quarter of a mile from Old Port Isabel Road just after two o'clock this morning, said police spokesman Sgt. Jimmy Manrrique.

"We received a call of a Ford Mustang that had lost control and crashed into a tree on the driver's side," Manrrique said. "The driver died instantly."

Aaron Delgado, 21, was pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace Tony Torres who ordered an autopsy and toxicology report to determine if Delgado was under the influence of alcohol or drugs, the spokesman said.

"At this point we don't know if alcohol played a factor, but we believe speed did," Manrrique said. "Witnesses describe the mustang overtaking traffic on the left side and loosing control, swerving and eventually hitting the tree."

Delgado's girlfriend, Lorraine Treviño, 20, was a passenger in the car and suffered internal injuries. She was transported to Valley Regional Medical Center where she is listed in serious condition, police said.
