Willacy probes teen's death
LA SARA — Willacy County sheriff’s officers are investigating the Monday death of Amanda Coronado, a 16-year-old sophomore at La Sara High School.
Sheriff Larry Spence said Friday that a family member removed an insulin pump from the girl over the weekend and she died Monday night.
The investigation is focusing on who removed the girl’s insulin pump and why it was removed, Spence said.
Spence said his officers are investigating statements that Jesusita Coronado, the girl’s mother, reportedly made at a Sunday Mass.
“There was some kind of scene,” the sheriff said.
La Sara schools Superintendent Rolando Peña identified the girl’s parents as Jesusita and Elias Coronado and said that Jesusita Coronado is presently hospitalized.
Brenda Riojas, spokeswoman for the Brownsville Catholic Diocese, said the church just learned of the situation on Friday and is not sure exactly what happened.
St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in La Sara is a mission church, which is served by Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Raymondville, Riojas said.
Amanda Coronado’s death has shocked everyone, Peña said.
“We’re just taken by the events, but we know very little,” he said. “As far as our school, we’re sorry this has happened to one of our students. We’re all saddened. We’re sorry it happened.”
A spokeswoman for Duddlesten’s Funeral Home in Raymondville said funeral arrangements for Amanda Coronado are pending.
