East, Crockett and Milam avenues will be repaved after the City Commission awarded a $206,450 bid to a contractor Tuesday.
To be funded with Community Development Block grant funds, the project went to low bidder Cubco Construction. Its bid was just slightly below the city's estimate.
"Obviously, it's a very positive project for residents," city engineer Carlos Lastra said.
The East Avenue section is not residential, but it is a major thoroughfare between the Southmost area and the University of Texas at Brownsville Texas Southmost College.
"They use it as a main road," Lastra said. "It is really bad."
The improvements at Portway Acres subdivision at Crockett and Milam are residential streets.
Three other construction firms also vied for the project.
The City Commission awarded Cubco Construction a $206,450 bid for paving, milling and overlaying improvements on several streets:
- East Avenue: 1,620 feet between Veterans International Bridge at Los Tomates and Impala Dr.
- Crockett Avenue: 925 feet between Austin and Bowie streets in the Portway Acres subdivision.
- Milam Avenue: 724-feet between Austin and Bowie streets in Portway Acres subdivision.
- Work starts within roughly two weeks.
