Winter Texan Elaine Gisel uses the built-in webcam on her laptop computer, to talk via Skype with family and friends in Minnesota.

Do you see what I see?

Webcams allow families stream home for Christmas

Well, it finally has happened. You can now be two places at once.

Cloning? Nope. And it's not holographics, either. Instead, folks in South Texas are using webcams to spend Christmas with loved ones in other parts of the world.

Just ask Jan Burgoin, 59, who plans to visit the grandchildren in Ottawa from her home at Autumn Acres Mobile Home Community and RV Park at 5034 Boca Chica Blvd.

"We've already made arrangements to meet with everybody online on Christmas Day. We've set up times," said Burgoin, whose husband, John, purchased three webcams last Christmas: one for his daughter in England, one for his son in Canada and one for their own home. Jan Burgoin's son in Canada already owned a webcam.

"We'll be talking to the kids and grandkids in England and the grandkids in Ottawa and my son in Winnipeg," said Jan Burgoin, who is originally from England. "So we'll be having conversations all over the place. We have to try and wait until after we've opened (Christmas presents), and then we can visit."

This won't be a three-way webcam visit, though.

"We can't do that yet," she said.

Elaine Gisel, at Fun N Sun RV Resort Park in San Benito, has been "Skyping" her son and grandchildren in Minnesota. Skype uses computer software to make phone calls in conjunction with a webcam.

"Oh, I think it's great," said Gisel, 69. "I can see what they're making in school, all their little arts and crafts and everything, and they love to come in front of the webcam and show grandma."

Gisel, a Winter Texan, also communicates with other people through Skype.

"When I'm up in Minnesota, I Skype people down here in Texas," she said.

Gisel began using Skype about a year ago, when she and others learned about the new technology at the Fun N Sun RV Resort Computer Club.

"Every once in a while, they'll have their 10 o'clock meeting down here in the summertime," she said, "and they'll call me up there just to chit-chat with 'em. So, we've done that three or four times."

Gisel used Skype with her grandchildren just a few days ago.

She chuckled. "The kids were running all over to get their arts and crafts to show me, to put it right in front of the TV, and the early Christmas presents they got. So it was kind of fun to see that, thanking grandma face to face. I think everybody should have it."

Jan Burgoin definitely is happy she has a webcam.

"It's wonderful because our grandchildren, they're all under the age of 6," she said. "I know they're important in our lives, but I think even more than that, we're important in theirs. It's very lucky for children to have grandparents."
