Brownsville police arrested a Rio Hondo man accused of escaping from a Cameron County restitution center.

Roberto Eduardo Ortiz, 22, was arrested Saturday afternoon at approximately 3 p.m. at a convenience store on Key Street and later charged with unauthorized absence from a correctional facility and criminal mischief, records show.

The arrest took place when one officer from the restitution center at 531 South Iowa St. called police after Ortiz broke a window, became hostile toward staff and eventually climbed out of the window, police reports show.

One of the center’s officers contacted police and followed Ortiz to the convenience store where he was arrested after a brief struggle with police.

Brownsville police arrested a Brownsville man who had been on the run for two years accessed of molesting two girls, police said.

Jorge Knight, 22, was arrested on three pending warrants Friday morning at his job at ICF Amfels by members of the Brownsville Fugitive Task Force and U.S. Marshals Service, said police spokesman Sgt. Jimmy Manrrique.

On Saturday morning, Knight went before a municipal judge who set his bond at $45,000 and sent him to Carrizalez-Rucker Detention Center.

Police began investigating Knight in 2007 at the request of Child Protective Services investigators who were looking into the molestation of two girls ages 6 and 5, Manrrique said.

According to police records, the alleged abuse took place from February to April 2007.

Police began looking for Knight who apparently fled to Matamoros and went into hiding.

"Our fugitive task force received information that Jorge (Knight) was working at ICF Amfels and moved to make the arrest," the spokesman said.
