Deputies arrest half-ton woman in 2-year-old's death

LA JOYA - A morbidily obese woman allegedly killed her 2-year-old nephew after striking the young boy's head twice.

Mayra Lizbeth Rosales, was charged with one count of capital murder today in her La Joya home. She was immediately realeased on a personal recognizance bond because authorities do not have the capacity to detain her and they believe the bedridden woman is not a flight risk.

Rosales intially told police she accidently fell on Eliseo Gonzalez Jr., crushing his skull and killing him while he was left in her care March 18. Preliminary autospy results released Monday, however, contradicted her story.

The results determined that Eliseo died from multiple skull fractures at the time of his death. The child also had a healing skull fracture that was sustained at least a month before his death, Hidalgo County Coroner Norma Jean Farley wrote.

The boy's mother, Jamie Lee Rosales, was also arrested today in Edinburg. Sheriff's deputies arraigned her on charges of an injury to a child, because she left her young son in the care of someone who did not have the capacity to care for the boy.
