TSTC building evacuated after fire alarm goes off
HARLINGEN - The Computer Science Programs Building at Texas State Technical College was evacuated at about 1 p.m. Monday when a smoke detector triggered an alarm.
Harlingen Fire Department responded with four fire engines. City and campus police officers also arrived to help with evacuation of the building.
Firefighters using ladders climbed onto the roof to check the air conditioning unit.
An electric motor on the air conditioning unit on the building's roof overheated and burned out, TSTC spokesman Dave Ralph said.
Classes wee canceled for the remainder of the day to allow time for the air circulation system to operate and for firefighters and maintenance workers to ensure possible hazardous fumes were neutralized or removed, Ralph said.
Classes in the building will resume as scheduled today, he said.
Students and staff members gathered around the scene but there were no reported injuries or damage to the building.
