Low-cost pet adoptions offered
Thinking of getting a new pet?
Thanks to a $1,850 grant from the Rotary Club of Brownsville Charitable Foundation, anyone who adopts an animal from the Brownsville Animal and Control Center will get an automatic $20 discount.
This means the usual $70 fee for a spay or neuter adoption will drop to $50.
The public is encouraged to stop by today between 1-5 p.m. at the city’s animal shelter, at 416 FM 511 Olmito.
The Brownsville animal shelter is too small to keep the dozens of animals taken in every day and adopting a pet is a good way for residents to take action in decreasing the amount of animals put down yearly, animal advocates said.
The shelter has about 88 dogs and 71 cats, according to its inventory. It takes in 30-40 animals daily, whether they are picked up as strays by animal control officers or dropped off by owners who no longer want their pets.
Each year the shelter adopts out about 1,500 animals and euthanizes another 5,000-6,000, shelter officials said.
