Don Breeden broadens artistic range
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Don Breeden is a Brownsville native who has an evident passion for art and enjoys focusing on subjects that interest him.
Paintings of wildlife, historical buildings and retablos are what he is often known for creating; he even illustrated the logo on the front page of The Brownsville Herald.
Although he continues to capture the beauty of South Texas, he is broadening his artistic range into something slightly more foreign.
About three or four years ago, he spoke to an art dealer who sells some of his pieces in the Houston area. The dealer encouraged Breeden to start painting Texas flags.
Breeden decided to take on the challenge and began to research Texas history.
"Almost all the things I do, I research as much as possible," Breeden said. "I usually take five to six hours to research to make sure I got them correct."
His research resulted in a series of the six flags that flew over Texas, as well as flags from the Republic of Texas.
The pieces have an antique impression while still containing a fresh and novel feeling.
Breeden wouldn't categorize himself as a history buff. Rather, he's just someone who loves doing research. However, he notes that many others interested in Texas history visit his gallery, especially to see his flag series and building pieces.
"Learning the history of Texas and and the flags inspired me to do more," he added.
Currently, he is working on a series of U.S. flags to add to his historical collection.
"That's what I do, I paint," Breeden said.
