Boat strikes jetties at Boca Chica Beach
Comments 0 | Recommend 0HARLINGEN — A malfunctioning global positioning system (GPS) was blamed for a 30-foot motorized boat going off course and hitting the jetties at Boca Chica Beach early Saturday night.
No injuries were reported.
It was not certain who owned the boat and the Coast Guard would not release names of the passengers.
“Their GPS cut off and they didn’t know where they were going,” said Coast Guard Petty Officer Jose Gonzalez.
He said the Coast Guard responded to the accident at about 7 p.m., sending a 33-foot vessel to the scene, but passengers from the wrecked boat made it to the jetty on their own and friends picked them up.
“It was pretty remarkable how no one was injured,” Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez said the keel appeared to be heavily damaged. The boat was pulled off the jetty Sunday.
