The initiative is an effort to help the large number of low-income residents and to encourage more individuals to go for higher education, which will result in better jobs and a better community.
The announcement, made at the United Way of Southern Cameron County headquarters, was the culmination of months of work, spearheaded by the United Way of Southern Cameron County and UTB-TSC.
The grant amount is for $1.3 million and $200,000 was awarded for in-kind technical assistance, resulting in a $1.5 million award.
Other partners in the project included BISD, Workforce Solutions Cameron, Brownsville Economic Development Council and the Brownsville Chamber of Commerce.
