Carrizalez-Rucker escapee back in custody; caught in school cafeteria
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Inmate Miguel Angel Alvarado walked away from the Carrizalez-Rucker Detention Center Monday by claiming to be another inmate, Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio said.
Lucio said Alvarado, 31, had the inmate identification bracelet of 21-year-old David Marfileno. Marfileno, in jail on a drug charge, had been slated for release Monday on a $5,000 personal recognizance bond.
Lucio said that Marfileno claimed that he had lost his bracelet. The whereabouts of Alvarado's bracelet was unknown.
The bracelets carry the name, date of birth and photograph of the inmates. Lucio said a jail officer failed to check the photograph. However, from three to four officers handled Alvarado through the release process.
Lucio said intensive inquiries are underway into Marfileno's claim and to determine if any officer might have been involved in Alvarado's escape.
Deputies captured Alvarado at 9:15 a.m. today at the Rivera High School cafeteria.
Deputies received a tip that Alvarado could be at a residence at 6606 Simon Place behind the school. Alvarado ran from the premises, but was captured without incident at the school. Alvarado was not armed.
"The school went into partial lockdown and was in the process of a full lockdown when the intruder was apprehended by deputies in the school's cafeteria," Brownsville Independent School District spokeswoman Drue Brown Brown said. "No students or employees were harmed."
There is no word yet on how Alvarado managed to get into the cafeteria.
Alvarado is again jailed on charges of aggravated robbery, evading arrest for the assault and robbery of Juanita Davis, 68, owner of San Miguel Gifts and Jewelry, 1617 E. Harrison Ave., in Harlingen, earlier this month.
A mail carrier found Davis lying in a pool of blood at her shop on the day of the robbery, another neighboring business owner said at that time.
Alvarado faces additional charges of escape and evading arrest. Others also could face charges pending findings of the inquiry that Lucio said would take several days to complete.
