April 6, 2005 Nancy De la Garza developed a love for music when she was in high school.
As a clarinet player for the Lopez High School band and a member of the fine arts program, De la Garza was introduced to a variety of musical genres.
By the time she was a senior, De la Garza had gained an appreciation for the arts that few teenagers ever experience, she said.
Now, as a member of the University of Texas Symphonic Ensemble, the college freshman is ready to give back to her community.
The 18-year-old will join her ensemble colleagues and perform in concert at 7 p.m., Friday at Lopez High School
De la Garza hopes the concert will encourage high school band members to continue playing their instruments after they graduate.
"Lopez has a very good fine arts program," De la Garza said. "Being in the band really motivated me. It helped me really fall in love with music. I really hope these (band members) really want to do that. Hopefully it (band) isnt something they do in high school and forget. I dont know what I would do if I didnt play an instrument."
Students will play several pieces including "Eyes of Texas," by Jerry Bilik and "Overture to Colas Breugnon" by Dimitri Kabalevsky
David Vela who is the president of the Texas-Exes of Brownsville, a local organization UT-Austin graduates, helped coordinate the concert.
"This is quite a treat for all music lovers," he said. "The band is renowned for being one of the best show bands in the country."
