Heavy rains made driving nearly impossible on U.S. Expressway 77/83 Wednesday morning, February 3, 2010.

NWS: Rip current, dangerous surf advisory for the Island

The National Weather Service has issued a coastal flood advisory and high surf advisory for Boca Chica and South Padre Island.

The NWS says a developing storm will increase east winds which will create high surf and minor coastal flooding on the beaches of both Boca Chica and the Island.

Forecasters say there is a high risk of rip current expected.

Widespread rain is expected throughout the Rio Grande Valley throughout the morning. The heavy rain is causing the water to settle on the highways, so motorists are urged to be extremely careful on the roads.

In Rio Hondo, unofficial rain totals topped two inches just before noon. In rural areas of Cameron County between Rio Hondo and San Benito, recently plowed fields are inundated with water.

The heavy rains also made visibility a slight problem in some areas.

The coastal flood and high surf advisories will remain in effect from noon until 6 p.m. this evening.
