Vegas oddsmakers tab 'Artist' as Oscars film fave

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Oddsmakers in Las Vegas say "The Artist" and its director Michel Hazanavicius have the best shots at winning top honors during the Academy Awards next month.

Odds released Monday by Johnny Avello of the Wynn Las Vegas race and sports book list "The Artist" as a 2-5 favorite to win an Oscar for best picture. Avello says Hazanavicius is a 6-5 favorite to win for best director.

Benjamin Eckstein of America's Line agrees with making the black-and-white, silent film the favorite. He says George Clooney and Meryl Streep are each 1-2 favorites in the top acting categories.

Nominations for the 84th annual Oscars were announced Monday. The awards will be given Feb. 26.
