Man charged with homicide after car crash
A car crash involving a motorcycle and a pick up resulted in the death of a Brownsville city employee and the arrest of a 20-year-old man, police said.
Andrew Barrera, 20, was arrested Sunday afternoon at the intersection of Dockberry and Jaime Circle and later charged with criminally negligent homicide, said police spokesman Sgt. Jimmy Manrrique.
Jorge Daniel Hurtado, a 31-year-old employee with the Parks and Recreations Department for more than five years, died instantly as a result of his injuries, police said.
On Monday morning, Barrera was released after posting a $10,000 bond set by municipal judge John Williamson.
According to police records, the accident took place when Barrera was travelling east on Dockberry Road and came across a Chrysler PT Cruiser that had stopped in order to turn into Jaime Circle.
Barrera went around the Cruiser turning into Jaime Circle, without seeing Hurtado who was traveling west on Dockberry on a 2008 blue Kawasaki Vulcan. Hurtado slammed into the pickup dying instantly from the impact, police records show.
"Barrera told the accident investigators that he was heading to his girlfriend's house before going to work," Manrrique said. "He was charged with negligent homicide because this wasn’t an accident. This was a reckless action that resulted in the death of Hurtado."
Police are still waiting on the toxicology results of Barrera’s blood to determine if drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident.
