Attacks on teen were warranted
Editor:
This is in reply to Italo Zarate’s letter about people calling for violence against the alleged killer of a puppy. First, this wasn’t a misguided kid, Gasca is an adult. Most adults realize that you can’t terribly mutilate and torture a dog to death. His actions caused a horrible death for that dog.
It is a shame that laws have to be passed to point out to some people that the senseless, inhumane treatment of animals is wrong.
I hope the sentence handed down to Gasca (if convicted) serves as a warning to those people that abuse animals and gives them pause before they decide to go berserk. I wonder if you are aware of the proven correlation between violence to animals and violence to humans. The next time Gasca decides to go berserk, it could be a child. And referring to other senseless killing of animals does not lessen the severity of his act.
The violence of his act brought attention from all over this country demanding justice for that puppy. It has also brought the attention of the Texas Humane Legislative Network. THLN is starting up a chapter in the Rio Grande Valley. This organization promotes humane treatment of animals through legislation, education and advocacy.
If you are interested in learning more about the organization, please visit the THLN Web site at www.thln.com. Help pass meaningful and effective legislation that will protect and benefit countless varieties of animals.

Don’t build road on railroad path
Editor:
OK, the Democratic candidates for Cameron County offices have said they do not support the West Loop Parkway, Tollway, Porkway, and now they need to say, “No!” to any road — “No!”
The soon-to-be abandoned eight miles of railroad tracks should be converted to a bike, hike and nature trail, a wonderful slice of serenity that would not divide neighborhoods or add to noise and pollution.
Be creative planners. If wed to motor vehicles:
-- Promote the use of the soon-to-open Flor de Mayo Bridge.
-- Adjust traffic lights for smoother vehicular movement.
-- Imagine better-utilized Central Boulevard, Elizabeth Street, Military Highway and Boca Chica Boulevard.
And planners, consider the need for open space, exercise, wildlife and contemplation. The road idea promotes none of those quality-of-life concerns.
