Tropical Storm Gustav forms in the Caribbean
A new tropical storm is brewing in the Caribbean.
The seventh tropical depression of the Atlantic hurricane season formed in the central Caribbean and and became Tropical Storm Gustav this afternoon. The storm is heading for the Dominican Republic and Haiti, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said.
The Dominican Repubic upgraded the tropical storm warning to a hurricane warning for the south coast of the country from Santo Domingo west to the southern border of Haiti.
The hurricane warning continues for parts of Haiti.
At 1 p.m. CST, the center of Tropical Depression Seven has located near latitude 15.8 north, longitude 70.5 west or about 225 miles south-southeast of Port Au Prince, Haiti. The depression is moving northwest near 14 mph, but is expected to slow down over the next day or two.
Gustav is expected to pass over Haiti on Tuesday.
