Brownsville lottery ticket wins $250,000
A Mega Millions lottery ticket purchased in Brownsville has won $250,000, according to the Texas Mega Millions website.
The ticket reportedly was purchased at an A&V Lopez supermarket.
“That’s what we heard,” A&V Lopez general manager Eliseo Castro said Saturday when asked about it. “I wish it was me.”
He said he had no further information, not even at which store the winning ticket was supposedly purchased.
“There’s a rumor that it’s the store on International, but I can’t confirm it,” he said. He said A&V Lopez has four supermarkets in Brownsville.
Castro said he doubted if he would get any more information about the lottery ticket until Monday at the earliest.
In some cases, a store that sells a winning lottery ticket also gets a payout – usually 1 percent, he said – but he believes that may be the case only for an actual jackpot winner.
The winning ticket purchased in Brownsville was for Friday’s drawing, where the winning numbers were 4-13-20-29-48, with a Mega Ball number of 36.
Two tickets purchased in Texas – the Brownsville ticket and one in Austin – matched the five numbers but not the Mega Ball, according to the website. Neither of the Texas tickets was a Megaplier winner.
Mega Millions is played in a number of states under an agreement with each state lottery involved.
According to the national Mega Millions website, an average of 35 percent of money spent on tickets goes to government services in the state where a ticket is sold, 50 percent goes to pay winners, and approximately 15 percent goes to retailer commissions and lottery operating costs.
Mega Millions claims to be America’s biggest jackpot game, with jackpots starting at $12 million and other prizes ranging from $2 to $250,000.
