Caterpillar moving jobs to Texas
AUSTIN (AP) - Caterpillar Inc. is moving one of its main assembly and paint facilities to Texas and creating more than 1,400 jobs in the state.
Gov. Rick Perry, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and Speaker Tom Craddick made the announcement Thursday. The construction equipment maker will get a state investment of $10 million from the Texas Enterprise Fund.
Caterpillar, based in Peoria, Ill., plans to consolidate and move a manufacturing and testing facility to Seguin from Illinois and South Carolina.
Earlier in the day, Caterpillar said it was laying off 814 employees at its engine assembly facility in Mossville, Ill. The company says it has been working to cut costs because of the economic downturn.
Perry's office says Texas was in competition with South Carolina and Mexico for the facility.
