22,000 Ike evacuees remain in Texas shelters
Comments 0 | Recommend 0ANGLETON, Texas (AP) - More than 22,000 people who fled Hurricane Ike remain in shelters across Texas.
Gov. Rick Perry met Thursday in Angleton with local officials and again urged Texans who evacuated to not return to devastated areas such as Galveston until given permission.
The state continues to operate more than 200 shelters. Nearly 15,000 people have left shelters since the height of Ike's aftermath.
Perry said more than 7,500 utility workers are working to restore power. Electricity is back on in nearly 900,000 homes around Houston, which went almost completely dark after Ike made landfall Saturday.
