UTB-TSC Capsules: Scorpions take unbeaten record to Austin

Riding a seven-match winning streak to start the season, the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College visits winless Huston-Tillotson at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Austin in the Red River Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

The No. 8 Scorpions are 7-0, including four victories at the Quality Inn Classic hosted by Columbia University (Mo.) last week. The last win came over No. 7 Columbia, 3-1.

A new NAIA coaches top 25 poll will be released late Tuesday afternoon, and the Scorpions are certain to climb one and possibly two positions. No. 6 Biola University is 7-3, but with two losses coming to No. 4 Lee University (Tenn.) and No. 5 Northwestern College (Iowa).

By contrast, Huston-Tillotson has yet to win a set in a 0-4 start to the season. The Rams were stopped by 3-0 scores by three California schools and an Illinois school at a tournament Aug. 27 to 28 in San Diego Aug. 27-28.

Following the HTU match, the Scorpions will be home for a seven-match stretch, starting Sept. 14 against Our Lady of the Lake at Manuel Garza B. Gymnasium.

Three Scorpions receive conference player of the week honors

The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College's Paula Barros, Gregner Gotay-Quinones and Ana Guerra received Red River Athletic Conference player of the week honors for their efforts for matches during the week of Aug. 30 to Sept. 5.

Barros was selected as RRAC setter of the week, Gotay-Quinones was RRAC lLibero of the week and Guerra was RRAC hitter of the week. The No. 8 Scorpions went 4-0 for the week at the Quality Inn Classic hosted by Columbia College (Mo.) that included a win over No. 7 Columbia.

Barros, a sophomore setter from Sao Paulo, Brazil, was named the tournament's most valuable player. She delivered 164 assists for the Scorpions, including 52 against Lindenwood. She recorded at least 32 assists in all four of the Scorpions' wins last week. She had a tremendous all-around performance that included 16 blocks, 16 kills and 38 digs.

Gotay-Quinones, a sophomore defensive specialist from Naranito, P.R., provided the defense for with 91 digs. She racked up 29 digs against Lindenwood and 23 against Columbia. Gotay-Quinones committed just nine receiving errors in 73 total attempts.

Guerra, a freshman middle blocker from Sao Paulo, Brazil, compiled 34 kills She contributed six kills against Columbia and a high of 12 against Lindenwood (Mo.). For the week, she committed just two errors in 51 total attempts for a hitting percentage of .627.
