UTB-TSC Capsules: Ayembillah honored by conference
University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College men's soccer forward Abass Ayembillah was one of three recipients as Red River Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the first of the weekly 2009 awards.
Ayembillah, a freshman from Accra, Ghana, went to high school at Liberty Christian Academy in Lynchburg, Va.
Ayembillah scored three goals during the Scorpions' 5-1 victory over Southern Nazarene on Sept. 5 at the Brownsville Sports Park. SNU, the NAIA preseason No. 16 team, was the first NAIA ranked men's soccer team to visit Brownsville.
For the season, Ayembillah has scored four goals in three games for the Scorpions, who are 3-0 after starting the season with three home games. UTB-TSC plays its next seven games on the road.
Callum Congreve of University of the Southwest (N.M.) and Theo Nabassi of Texas Wesleyan shared the award with Ayembillah. Chris Veenhuis of Huston-Tillotson won defensive player of the week honors.
Three Scorpions volleyball players honored
UTB-TSC volleyball players middle blocker Valquiria Caboclo, setter Daianarah Bracero and libero Anayeli Trevino all received Red River Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week awards.
In its only match last week, UTB-TSC (6-1) recorded a 3-0 victory over The University of Texas-Pan American, an NCAA Division I opponent.
Caboclo, a freshman from Sao Paolo, Brazil, pounded nine kills on 18 attacks with just four errors and a hitting percentage of .278. She also had seven digs and three block to take home the hitter of the Week award.
Bracero, a senior from Sabana Grande, P.R., contributed 25 assists to raise her average to 8.67 assists per game. She also provided 11 digs. She shared the setter of the week award with Evoni Darling of Texas Wesleyan.
Trevino, a sophomore from Brownsville, collected 10 digs and holds an average of 3.5 digs per game to win libero of the week award.
