Tennis Capsules: McEnroe says Nadal can surpass Federer
DOHA, Qatar (AP) — Roger Federer may have the most Grand Slam titles, but John McEnroe says Rafael Nadal is building a resume that could make him the greatest of all time.
Federer has won a record 16 Grand Slams, seven more than Nadal. Yet Nadal has a 14-7 record against Federer. Nadal has won the Davis Cup title with Spain and an Olympic singles gold medal — two achievements that have eluded Federer.
McEnroe, speaking at a sports conference in Doha, said "there is an argument to be made that Rafael Nadal may be the greatest player eventually, even possibly now."
McEnroe adds that the 29-year-old Swiss star could add a "couple more" to that tally.
Former Swedish great Bjorn Borg said Federer is still the greatest, although "Rafa has the chance to be the greatest player" if he stays healthy.
Nadal to face Djokovic at ATP World Tour Finals
LONDON (AP) — Top-ranked Rafael Nadal has been placed in the same group as Novak Djokovic in the draw for the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals in London.
No. 2 Roger Federer faces Paris Masters champion Robin Soderling in his group, along with home favorite Andy Murray and David Ferrer of Spain.
Nadal and Djokovic are joined by Tomas Berdych and Andy Roddick in Group A.
The top two players from each round-robin group will play in the semifinals at London’s O2 Arena. The tournament begins on Sunday, with the final on Nov. 28.
Nadal, winner of three Grand Slam titles this year, has never won the year-end tournament. Federer is bidding to win the ATP Finals for a record-tying fifth time.
Last year’s winner, Nikolay Davydenko, failed to qualify.
