TCEQ names new watermaster for Rio Grande Valley

McALLEN — The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality named Erasmo Yarrito Jr. the Rio Grande Valley’s new watermaster.

Yarrito will assume the new role on Nov. 1, 2009, the agency said in a statement issued Thursday.

As watermaster, Yarrito will manage the allocation of water assigned to the United States in the Rio Grande Basin below the Amistad Reservoir. This amount, which fluctuates regularly, is distributed to users based on established municipal accounts or, in the case of unallocated water, monthly availability used by irrigators.

Yarrito has worked with the binational International Boundary and Water Commission on various projects — including the Falcon Dam Project — with the Texas Water Commission and with the TCEQ as a watermaster deputy in Eagle Pass, in the Rio Grande Watermaster office in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, and as an environmental investigator with the TCEQ Region 15–Harlingen office.

In March 2008, Yarrito returned to the Rio Grande Watermaster Program as a team leader and was appointed the deputy Rio Grande watermaster for the TCEQ in October 2008.
