Tax preparer admits to preparing false returns
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - A tax preparer has been remanded into the custody of U.S. Marshals after she pleaded guilty to six counts of preparing and presenting a materially false tax return to the Internal Revenue Service.
Joyce M. Simmons of Fort Worth entered the guilty pleas on Friday before U.S. District Judge John McBryde.
Simmons admitted that six of the tax returns she submitted while doing business as Diamond Notary and Tax Service claimed items she knew the taxpayers weren't entitled to.
Sentencing is set for Oct. 2.
James T. Jacks, acting U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Texas, said Simmons faces a maximum of 18 years in prison, a $1.5 million fine and restitution to the IRS.
