Rio Grande City schools leader named ‘Texas Superintendent of the Year’
RIO GRANDE CITY — Roel Gonzalez, the superintendent of the Rio Grande City school district, will be named “Texas Superintendent of the Year” by the American Association of School Administrators today, according to a district spokeswoman.
Gonzalez, who has led the district since 2003, is a former principal of Economedes High School in Edinburg.
The AASA is expected to name top administrators for each state today.
The field will be narrowed in December to four finalists for the annual nationwide award, with the overall winner to be named in February.
Gonzalez’s award comes one year after another Valley superintendent received a similar statewide honor from a different group.
The Texas Association of School Boards named Daniel King its 2006 “Superintendent of the Year.” Now superintendent of Pharr-San Juan-Alamo schools, King was superintendent of the Hidalgo school district at the time of the award.
