Man fails to make bond on human smuggling charge

A Mexican man remained in federal custody Wednesday after failing to make bond on an alien smuggling charge, records show.

Edgar Abraham Martinez, on Tuesday, went before U.S. Magistrate Judge Ronald Morgan, who set his bond at $25,000 and remanded him to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.

Martinez was arrested on Oct. 28 when a U.S. Border Patrol agent, patrolling the river levee near Oklahoma Road, observed several individuals near the river get into a pickup, court records show.

The agent called for backup and provided a description of the vehicle to fellow agents, who found the vehicle at the end of Alabama Road — as the occupants fled on foot, USBP said.

Border Patrol agents followed the individuals and were able to arrest Martinez and 11 undocumented immigrants, records show.

Once in custody, Martinez told the agents that he was paid to help a friend smuggle the immigrants into the U.S., USBP said.
