Brownsville police are investigating a shooting outside of Sunrise Mall Sunday Jan. 8, 2011. Investigators say some of the suspects involved were in the Ford Escape SUV seen on the left.

Police investigating shooting at Sunrise Mall

One male was shot outside of Sunrise Mall just after 6:30 p.m. this evening, police said.

Preliminary information indicates there was a fight among people in two separate vehicles outside Dillard's, Sgt. Juan Lopez said.

Shots rang out, and a man was taken to Valley Regional Medical Center with gunshot wounds.

The man's condition is unavailable at this time, police said.

When police arrived, one of the vehicles had fled and one remained in the parking lot, Lopez said.

Investigators found rifles in the Ford Escape.

Police have one person in custody and are searching the area for more suspects.

Witnesses said the vehicles were involved in a traffic accident before the shooting.

Gloria Carrera said her family members were bystanders and their vehicle was struck by the suspects.

Her sister-in-law, who is pregnant, was transported to the hospital. Her injuries did not appear to be life-threatening. The injuries she sustained were due to the traffic accident.
