AUSTIN - The undefeated No. 6 University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College women's volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 victory over Huston-Tillotson on Tuesday in the Red River Athletic Conference opener for both teams at the Mary E. Branch Gymnasium.

With the 25-10, 25-15, 25-8 victory, the Scorpions are now 8-0 overall. HTU remained winless at 0-5, 0-1.

Head coach Todd Lowery substituted freely throughout the match. All 15 Scorpion players got into the match. No statistics were immediately available.

Tuesday's match ended an eight-match streak of road matches to start the 2010 season. The Scorpions play their first home match Sept. 14 against Our Lady of the Lake at Manuel Garza B. Gymnasium.

The OLLU match starts a string of seven straight home matches and 11 out of 12 at the Garza Gym. The 11 matches are the only home matches for the Scorpions.

Scorpions jump two spots in NAIA coaches poll

As expected, University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College moved up two positions to the No. 6 in the first edition of the Tachikara-NAIA Volleyball Coaches' Top 25 Poll released Tuesday.

The Scorpions (7-0) were ranked No. 8 in the preseason poll released in August. Tuesday's release marks the first of 11 season rankings announced weekly.

Fresno Pacific, the three-time national champion, remained in the No. 1 position. The top five teams remained unchanged.

UTB-TSC knocked off seventh-ranked Columbia College (Mo.) 3-1 on Saturday in the Quality Inn Classic hosted by Columbia, which dropped one spot to No. 8.

Biola (Calif.), which was ranked No. 6, dropped to the No. 10 position with three losses in its first 10 games.

The biggest jump in the poll came from Lubbock Christian (7-0), which moved from No. 22 to No. 12. The Lady Chaparrals will be one of four visiting teams in the Scorpion Volleyball Classic on Sept. 17 and 18 at Manuel Garza B. Gymnasium. The Scorpions play LCU Sept. 17 and will also have a rematch against Columbia College on Sept. 18.
