Scorpions earn first win of season

HOUSTON - The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College men's soccer team got in the win column for the first time in three games with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over University of St. Thomas on Saturday night.

The Scorpions are now 1-1-1 for the year. They play William Carey at 2 p.m. Sunday.

"I was really happy with the second-half performance," Scorpions coach Dan Balaguero said. "We made several substitutions in the second half, and the guys who came off the bench played great."

UST scored in the 25th minute on a 19-yard shot for a 1-0 lead that stood up at halftime.

The Scorpions scored when Steve Howard delivered a perfect corner kick to Padraic Ormsby, who hammered it home in the 70th minute to tie the game at 1.

In the 81st minute, Morten Benested took a pass from Mario Perez and scored from close range to give the Scorpions a 2-1 lead which stood up for the final nine minutes of the game.

The win was sweet for UTB-TSC, which had a 0-1-1 frustrating start to the season in Mississippi last week.

Scorpions goalkeeper Juan Gamboa had three saves. The Scorpions had 11 shots on goal compared to four for UST.

Sunday's game against WCU is a big one.

"We need to refocus and get ready for (today)," Balaguero said. "(Today's) game is huge for us."

William Carey is 1-0-1 after a scoreless tie with St. Thomas on Friday. The Crusaders were 13-4-3 in 2009 and advanced to the opening round of the NAIA national championships, just as the Scorpions did.
